The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced it will proceed with the "complete depopulation" of hundreds of ostriches at a farm in Edgewood, British Columbia. This follows the Supreme Court of Canada's refusal to hear an appeal from the farm owners challenging the cull order.
The CFIA issued the cull order on December 31, after detecting an outbreak of avian flu at Universal Ostrich Farms. The agency confirmed it has complied with all court orders and expects the farm owners and their supporters to do the same following the Supreme Court's judgment.
At the farm, supporters gathered in a prayer circle as co-owner Dave Bilinski shared the Supreme Court's ruling.
“Maybe a miracle will happen yet,” Bilinski expressed.
Meanwhile, a protester labeled the CFIA as “criminals” and expressed intent to leave Canada, while another attendee called the ruling “disgusting.”
The CFIA is set to proceed with the ostrich cull after the Supreme Court rejected the farm owners' appeal, ending legal obstacles despite passionate protests.
