Matt and Ross Duffer, known as the Duffer Brothers, describe the upcoming theatrical release of "Stranger Things" as a long-cherished dream realized. The two-hour series finale, titled "The Rightside Up," will debut on Netflix and simultaneously in over 350 movie theaters this December.
This event marks the first time a Netflix series episode will be shown theatrically. Ross shared at the world premiere of the fifth and final season at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood,
“This has been a dream of ours for a while.”
Netflix announced the plan shortly after an interview with Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, who had previously denied any theatrical release plans for "Stranger Things."
“A lot of people — a lot, a lot, a lot of people — have watched ‘Stranger Things’ on Netflix,” Bajaria said. “It has not suffered from lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.”
Matt praised Bajaria’s ability to keep the plan secret, stating,
“Ross and I just folded. The truth is…this was in the works for a long time. Netflix came to us with the idea. It was their idea to have the finale on a separate day and we thought that was cool, specifically because we thought we could pitch this movie theater idea, which we had never pitched before, honestly.”
The Duffer Brothers and Netflix collaborated to create a special theatrical release for the "Stranger Things" finale, fulfilling a long-held aspiration and offering fans a unique viewing experience.
