Switzerland is threatening the sustainable transport of goods across Europe by disregarding the EU Switzerland Land Transport Agreement. The EU must act to protect the Single Market's integrity and avoid a potential supply chain crisis.
While the EU is launching its Transport Package and working to decarbonize transport, Switzerland has chosen to implement unilateral measures that weaken sustainable freight movement across the continent. Instead of collaborating through the Joint Network Secretariat to enhance rail freight safety, Switzerland decided to proceed independently.
Most freight through Switzerland links Europe's largest seaport with major industrial hubs. The Swiss measures threaten not only to disrupt this critical supply chain but also impose restrictions on the broader European market, conflicting with the existing bilateral transport agreement.
"The EU cannot afford to stay silent any longer. It must be firm in protecting not only the integrity of its Single Market but also in ensuring that a sustainable mode of transport is not disadvantaged."
In autumn 2025, Switzerland announced new rail freight regulations across its territory, effective from 1 January 2026. These changes respond to the 2023 Gotthard Base Tunnel accident and come as Europe finalizes enhanced pan-European safety standards.
Author's summary: Switzerland's unilateral rail freight measures conflict with EU agreements, risking European supply chains and sustainable transport progress.
