Carrie Bickmore Named 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria

Carrie Bickmore, a respected broadcaster and tireless supporter of brain cancer initiatives, has been named the 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria. The award was given to her on November 6 in Melbourne, honoring her dedicated work in advancing brain cancer research and awareness.

Dedication to Brain Cancer Advocacy

Bickmore's involvement in the fight against brain cancer stems from deeply personal experience. Since 2015, her campaigns have raised more than $27 million supporting innovative research aimed at discovering a cure.

"Bickmore's commitment to fighting brain cancer is both personal and profound."

The Brain Cancer Centre

Her ongoing fundraising led to the creation of The Brain Cancer Centre in 2021—an institution bringing together leading researchers dedicated to developing new treatments. The centre has championed diverse research projects and groundbreaking clinical trials, furthering progress in this challenging medical area.

"Brain cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Australians under 40."

Bickmore’s quest was inspired by her own loss, after her husband Greg died from brain cancer in 2010.

Honoring Other Australians

Bickmore is not the only individual recognized this year. Bryan Lipmann AM, an advocate for elderly people experiencing homelessness, has been awarded the title of 2026 Senior Australian of the Year for Victoria.
