After reading Waste Wars by Alexander Clapp, one's perception of throwing away items like plastic bags or old mobile phones will change. The book reveals alarming truths about where waste ends up, often in poor countries.
Alexander Clapp's book is filled with disturbing descriptions of waste routes from the rich world to the poor, mainly to sub-Saharan Africa. The more difficult an item is to recycle, the higher the likelihood it will end up there.
Where do you think they end up?
As rich countries became more environmentally aware, they promoted recycling. However, not all waste can be easily recycled, and some items, like unwanted cabbage leaves, pose less concern.
