Mark Parton Elected New Leader of the Canberra Liberals

Mark Parton MLA has been chosen as the new Leader of the Canberra Liberals, with Deborah Morris MLA appointed as Deputy Leader. This change follows the resignation of former leader Leanne Castley and deputy Jeremy Hanson earlier today.

Castley and Hanson stepped down to give the party “the best possible chance of success in the 2028 election.” At a party room meeting held today, neither Castley nor Hanson sought re-election for their leadership roles.

Background of New Leadership

“With support from all elected members, I can announce that I have accepted the position. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson for their work over the last 12 months.” — Mark Parton

Parton emphasized the importance of unity within the party, stating the need to foster open discussions, appreciate diverse views, and find common ground to strengthen their collective mission.

“Our priority remains clear: continue building an alternative government that delivers for the ACT.” — Mark Parton

Changes in Legislative Assembly Roles

Following his election as leader, Parton resigned from his role as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly will elect a new Speaker in December. Until then, ACT Greens MLA Andrew Braddock will act as Deputy Speaker.

Previous Leadership

Leanne Castley became the Liberals leader after the October 2024 election, replacing Elizabeth Lee.

Summary: Mark Parton’s leadership marks a fresh start for the Canberra Liberals, focusing on unity and preparing strategically for the 2028 election.
