Super Typhoon Uwan rapidly intensified on Sunday morning, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). The agency raised Signal No. 5 warnings in the Polillo Islands, parts of Camarines Norte, and Catanduanes due to extremely dangerous conditions.
At 8 a.m., Uwan was reported to have maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) with gusts reaching 230 kph. The super typhoon was located 125 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west-northwest at 25 kph.
Pagasa issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 for several areas, signaling life-threatening wind speeds of 185 kph or more expected within twelve hours.
"Uwan is packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph), with gusts of up to 230 kph," the state weather bureau said.
This period from Sunday to Monday morning is considered the most critical for the affected regions.
Super Typhoon Uwan's rapid intensification prompts the highest wind warnings, forecasting life-threatening conditions primarily in the Bicol region in the coming hours.
