Eurovision hero Sam Ryder takes on role as Jesus Christ Superstar

British singer-songwriter Sam Ryder, known for his hit Space Man that brought the UK to second place at Eurovision 2022, is set to star as Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. The production will debut at the London Palladium next summer.

This marks Ryder’s first venture into musical theatre, taking the lead in a newly reimagined version of Timothy Sheader’s 2016 production, originally staged for Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. That version had several successful runs, including transfers to the Barbican and tours across the UK and the US.

Reimagined Production at the Palladium

Producer Michael Harrison expressed his excitement about the upcoming show, calling it “thrilling” to see a new version created especially for the Palladium.

“In Sam we have a true superstar to play the iconic title role.”

A Legacy of Musical Greatness

Ryder spoke of the honour of performing in one of the most significant works in musical theatre history, noting the influence of previous performers.

“It’s humbling to follow in the footsteps of rock vocal titans like Ian Gillan and John Farnham.”

The Palladium, owned by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, has long been central to the musical’s history. Created in 1970 by Webber and lyricist Tim Rice as a concept album, Jesus Christ Superstar became a global sensation. Its Broadway debut in 1971 and London opening in 1972—with Paul Nicholas as Jesus—cemented its status as a classic. By the time it closed in 1980, it was the longest-running musical in the West End.
