President Elect May Face Fines Over Remaining Posters

Several election posters remain displayed in Balla and Castlebar, potentially subjecting the incoming President to littering fines. Catherine Connolly won the Presidential Election on October 24 and will be inaugurated as Ireland's 10th President on November 11.

The Irish Independent reports that numerous posters stayed up in Balla, with additional ones spotted recently in Castlebar. According to the Litter Pollution Act 1997, candidates can only put up posters within 30 days before polling and must remove them within seven days after, which means all posters should have been taken down by midnight on October 31.

"Ms Connolly, who received 63.4% of the vote in a landslide victory, could face fines of €150 for each poster that remains up past the applicable date."
