New Group Rallies Old North Residents for Safer Roads

Near a busy intersection in north London, close to a traffic bollard recently hit by an SUV and just blocks from where a crossing guard was injured in June, neighbours gathered this week to demand safer streets. They say city support is essential to address these dangers.

Community Concerns and Survey Results

Dan Cameron, a resident of Old North, expressed the community's urgency:

“These feel like intolerable risks. The main thing is that we get something done that's concrete and effective. We want a seat at the table with the city.”

Cameron is a founding member of Advocates for Calmer Traffic in Old North (ACTION). At the Cheapside and Maitland streets intersection, he and other members presented findings from a survey of about 200 local residents regarding traffic safety.

Focus on Infrastructure to Improve Safety

Cameron highlighted the group's approach going forward:

“Intervening in the way the traffic system is designed in the neighborhood to force cars to slow down, maybe reducing the volume of cars coming off the main roads that shouldn't be into our neighborhoods, that kind of thing.”

The group aims to collaborate with city officials to develop concrete solutions that effectively reduce traffic dangers in Old North.
