NHS England announced that 2.4 million flu vaccination appointments will be available for booking starting next week. This availability aims to protect the public as the UK prepares for a severe flu season.
Experts warn thousands could die from flu this winter amid expectations of high infection rates. Last winter, deaths from flu more than doubled, with 7,757 fatalities recorded in 2024–2025 compared to 3,555 the previous year.
However, the 2024–2025 flu death toll remains lower than the 15,867 deaths reported during the 2022–2023 season, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Australia, often a predictor of the UK’s flu trends, recently experienced its worst flu season on record, raising concerns about the coming months in the UK.
Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive, stated: “There is no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest our staff have ever faced.” He added, “Since stepping into this role, the thought of a long, drawn-out flu season has kept me awake at night.”
The NHS is urgently urging people to get flu vaccinations as experts predict a severe flu season with rising deaths and hospital strain in the UK this winter.
