Although Alberta’s fire season officially ends on Friday, dry and windy weather has prompted new fire advisories in the southern part of the province, including Rocky View County. Both the east and west sides of the county face a moderate fire risk due to these conditions.
Rocky View County Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner explains that it is not unusual to see such advisories late in the season. He highlights that weather can shift quickly during this period, increasing fire risks.
“This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly,” said Messner.
Messner notes that dry conditions have led to a rise in grass fires recently, with up to three occurring in a single day. Some of these fires might be caused by human actions, such as discarded lit cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way,” he warned.
Alongside the advisory, the county has imposed a fire ban. This ban suspends existing permits for fireworks and outdoor burning, but allows for activities like barbecuing, using camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces.
There is no clear timeline for when the advisory will be lifted. Deputy Chief Messner expects it to last at least another week as dry weather continues.
Summary: Rocky View County faces a moderate fire risk due to persistent dry and windy conditions, leading to advisories and fire bans aimed at preventing human-caused fires during this vulnerable late season.
