Few stories have captivated like Marco Penge’s rise in professional golf. Less than a year ago, the 27-year-old Englishman was on the brink of losing his DP World Tour card. Today, after three DP World Tour wins, he is a strong contender in the Race to Dubai and holds a PGA Tour card for next season.
Penge arrives in the United Arab Emirates for the DP World Tour Play-Offs with momentum and confidence. His breakthrough year features a close chase of World Number Two Rory McIlroy for the Harry Vardon Trophy.
“He’s obviously a bit of a role model and inspires me a lot. It’s nice to be going head-to-head with him. We’ll see what happens,” Penge said about McIlroy.
Just one year ago, Penge was fighting to keep his DP World Tour card at the 2024 Genesis Championship in Korea. He needed a birdie on the final hole to make the cut and secure his playing rights.
“That day was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been. But when that putt dropped, I knew I belonged out here,” Penge recalls.
His journey has not been without obstacles; a knee operation, a suspension, and other career challenges might have ended other players’ careers. Penge credits his strong mentality for his continued progress.
“I think my best attribute is probably my mentality,” he said.
Marco Penge transformed setbacks into success this season, rising quickly to challenge Rory McIlroy in a remarkable comeback story.
