Doha Summit Ends with Call for Action

The Second World Summit for Social Development concluded in Doha on Thursday, urging nations to shift rapidly from pledges to concrete implementation. Delegates emphasized that the Doha Political Declaration should drive measurable progress in reducing poverty, promoting decent work, and strengthening social inclusion.

A Shift from Promises to Solutions

Speaking at the closing press conference, President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock described the event as a move from identifying problems to executing proven strategies that foster inclusive growth.

“Copenhagen taught us 30 years ago that social development and inclusion are essential for strong societies,” she said. “We promised to leave no one behind. Social development is not a ‘nice to have’ nor an act of charity. It is in the self-interest of every country.”

Baerbock warned that hunger and poverty no longer stem from scarcity but from conflict, inequality, and governance failures. She added:

“One of the biggest problems is not money as such. It is rather how it is invested.”

Global Participation and Practical Outcomes

The summit gathered over 40 heads of state and government, 230 ministers and senior officials, and nearly 14,000 participants. Alongside plenary and roundtable meetings, more than 250 “solution sessions” explored practical ways to broaden social protection, expand access to healthcare and education, and support dignified jobs.

Summary

The Doha Summit concluded with a united call to transform social commitments into action, focusing on fairness, inclusion, and effective investment in human well-being.
