Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Cole Escola are collaborating to develop a feature film centered on Miss Piggy, the iconic Muppet diva. The project is in its early stages at Disney, which holds the rights to the Muppets.
Miss Piggy, who debuted on Jim Henson’s “The Muppet Show” in the 1970s, has never previously starred in her own feature film. Lawrence and Stone will act as producers, while Escola, a Tony Award winner for the Broadway play Oh, Mary!, will write the screenplay.
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence shared on the podcast Las Culturistas, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.
When asked if they would co-star, Lawrence teased, I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].
During an appearance on the Tonight Show, Lawrence explained that Emma Stone came up with the idea during the pandemic lockdowns amid the rise of cancel culture.
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,'” Lawrence recalled. “Now that is not the plot necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
The film is currently in early development, with further details still forthcoming.
