Opinion writer Jayden Shipley reviews Dwayne Johnson’s performance in The Smashing Machine. This op-ed does not necessarily reflect the views of the University Daily Kansan and its members.
The Smashing Machine has sparked divided opinions worldwide. Some viewers believe it deserves Oscar consideration, while others see it as a weak point in Johnson’s career. For me, if you don’t appreciate Johnson’s work here, you likely won’t enjoy his films overall.
Johnson portrays Mark Kerr, an MMA fighter wrestling with addiction and coming to terms with personal loss. The film closely follows the storyline of the documentary The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr, even replicating some shots exactly.
To enhance the film’s authenticity, real fighters such as Ryan Bader and Oleksandr Usyk appear, adding credibility to the scenes.
One of the film’s biggest strengths is Johnson’s acting. Historically criticized for playing versions of himself rather than distinct characters, Johnson risked undermining this biographical drama. Instead, he delivers a remarkable transformation, altering his mannerisms, voice, and physique to fully embody Kerr.
While Johnson’s portrayal is the film’s main highlight, debates have arisen about Emily Blunt’s role and whether her talent was underused.
“If you don’t enjoy this performance from Johnson, then you will never like his films.”
Summary: Dwayne Johnson’s compelling transformation anchors The Smashing Machine, offering a gripping and authentic portrayal that may divide audiences but showcases his growth as an actor.
