After winning three consecutive Open Division titles in the L.A. City Section playoffs from 2021 to 2023, Birmingham Charter's streak was halted by Narbonne last year. The Patriots had built a historic run, breaking the record for most consecutive wins over City Section opponents — surpassing LA Wilson’s 39-win streak from 1978 with 48 straight victories.
However, Birmingham's hopes for a fourth straight City crown ended with a loss to Narbonne in the Open Division semifinals. The situation changed dramatically after the season, as Narbonne was forced to vacate its Open Division title and forfeit all victories due to CIF violations involving ineligible players. This ruling technically restored Birmingham's semifinal loss to a win.
Under the guidance of coach Jim Rose, Birmingham Charter remains a top contender in the Open Division. The Patriots’ streak now stands at 54 consecutive wins over City teams. Entering the playoffs as the No. 2 seed, they appear poised for a showdown with other top teams.
Birmingham's playoff run begins with a home game against a newcomer, the Cougars, who are making their first Open Division appearance. The Open Division final is scheduled for November 29 at LA Southwest College.
"Birmingham Charter won three straight LA City Section Open Division championships from 2021 to 2023, breaking a historic win streak and cementing their place in City Section history."
"Narbonne had to vacate its title due to CIF violations including competing with ineligible players, leading to forfeiture of all its victories."
Author’s summary: Birmingham Charter aims to reclaim its dominance in the L.A. City Section playoffs, building on a restored historic streak despite last year's challenges and changes in the competition.
