In their much-anticipated first matchup of the season, Slovenian star Luka Doncic delivered a dominant performance with 35 points, nine rebounds, and 13 assists. He also recorded five steals and two blocks, helping the Lakers secure a dramatic win at Crypto.com Arena. The victory improved Los Angeles to a 7–2 record as they await the season debut of injured superstar LeBron James.
“They only lost one (other) game, so to come back, being with (Austin Reaves) and LeBron out, it's unbelievable,” said Doncic.
Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan each added 16 points, while seven Spurs players scored in double figures. However, Wembanyama was limited by foul trouble for much of the game and fouled out with 1:40 remaining and San Antonio trailing 113–112.
The Spurs had a final opportunity when a Lakers inbounds error with 1.2 seconds left gave them possession, but they failed to convert and fell just short.
In another highlight of the night, the Portland Trail Blazers mounted a strong comeback to hand the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, their first loss of the season.
