After nearly six decades, the Hall-Atwater Laboratory is set to be demolished in 2027. The building has become the least energy-efficient on campus, with outdated design and technologies.
“Hall-Atwater has far exceeded its service life,”
Associate Vice President of Facilities Alan Rubacha stated, highlighting the need for replacement of its systems. The building's energy use intensity (EUI) is 270, significantly higher than the new science building's projected EUI of 84.
Architectural firm Payette assessed the building and determined that maintenance costs over the next three decades would be comparable to constructing a new facility. Author's summary: Hall-Atwater Laboratory to be demolished in 2027 due to inefficiency.
