Could Melatonin Be Silently Harming Your Heart?

Melatonin's Hidden Heart Risk

Researchers have discovered a surprising connection between long-term melatonin use and heart failure in patients with chronic insomnia.

A study of over 130,000 adults with insomnia found that taking melatonin for a year or more was associated with a nearly doubled risk of developing heart failure, more than triple the risk of hospitalization for heart failure, and nearly twice the risk of death over five years.

Marketed as nature’s sleep switch, melatonin has become a nightly habit for millions.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025, raising concerns about the potential cardiovascular risks of long-term melatonin use.

Author's summary: Melatonin may harm the heart in insomnia patients.
