Constitutional Protection for Local Bodies in Punjab
The Punjab Assembly has urged the federal government to amend Article 140-A of the Constitution of Pakistan to ensure constitutional protection for local governments.
Article 140-A states:
Each Province shall, by law, establish a local government system and devolve political, administrative and financial responsibility and authority to the elected representatives of the local government.
The amendment seeks to mandate local government polls within 90 days of dissolution. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is responsible for holding local government elections.
The resolution aims to provide clarity and details to Article 140-A, which currently remains ambiguous.
