Coach Matt Dobson had faith in taking over as head coach at Statesboro High, aiming to restore the Blue Devil football team to its former glory.
In his first year, Statesboro made a surprising run as a four seed into the second round of the playoffs. Now, in his third year, the team is one win away from its first region title since 2011.
Cross-county rival Effingham County is set to visit Womack Field on Friday night, and a Blue Devil victory will secure the region title.
Last Friday, the Blue Devils defeated South Effingham 27-17, with Coach Dobson acknowledging it wasn't their best performance.
“It says a lot about where this team has gotten that we can win a game where we weren’t necessarily at our best,”
Dobson said, highlighting the importance of playing complementary football.
The Blue Devils were able to respond to every Mustang score, making big plays on offense, defense, and special teams.
