Half of Illinois students reading at grade level, fewer in math under loosened standards

Illinois Students' Performance Under New Standards

Newly released data from state assessments reveals that only half of Illinois public school students can read at grade level, while 2-in-5 can do math proficiently in 2025.

This comes after the state lowered proficiency standards, artificially inflating the numbers. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, 39% of students were proficient in math, and just over half could read at grade level.

The change in standards means that many students reported as "proficient" are actually struggling. Moreover, the shift makes it impossible for parents to compare proficiency rates to previous school years.

Additionally, the data shows that enrollment continues to decline, and absenteeism remains high.

The state's decision to lower proficiency standards has made the numbers look better, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the actual performance of the students.

Author's note: Illinois students face challenges in reading and math.
