Trump Would Rather Let Birth Control Expire Than Give It to Africans as Aid

Trump Administration Allows Contraceptives to Expire

The Trump administration is permitting a stockpile of nearly $10 million worth of contraceptives to expire in a Belgian warehouse, intended as aid for low-income women primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.

Nonprofit organizations have pleaded to deliver the life-saving aid, which includes $9.7 million worth of IUDs, implants, and birth control pills.

The medication could provide pregnancy prevention to roughly 1.6 million women, according to an estimate from the Guttmacher Institute.

The State Department had announced plans to incinerate the contraceptives, originally intended for distribution by the U.S. Agency for International Development before it was dismantled by Trump.
