Ohio University associate professor Tom Hayes was replaced as a teacher in a master's program film editing class due to his absence from class, which is required by university policy.
Hayes, a documentary filmmaker and associate professor in the school of film, was detained by the Israeli military after participating in a humanitarian mission to Gaza. He returned to Ohio on Sunday.
"Here's what's so ironic about this. It's the students who lose here,"
Hayes said, after being removed from the course on Monday. The university stated that it has an obligation to serve students by delivering courses with regular faculty interactions.
