Diversity and inclusion are often used together, but they have distinct meanings. Diversity refers to representation, while inclusion is about creating a sense of belonging.

Diversity is about representation, about who is in the room. Inclusion is about belonging, about who feels welcome, valued and able to thrive in that room.

In the construction industry, this difference is crucial. To address skills shortages, the industry must become more diverse and attract talent from a wider range of groups.

Independent merchants, being local by nature, have close ties to their communities, but their workforce does not yet reflect the diversity of these communities.
