I Used to Be an Anti-Hunter. Now I Take My Daughter Hunting with Me

From Anti-Hunter to Hunter: A Personal Journey

My transformation from an anti-hunter to a bird and big-game hunter has been a significant one. However, teaching my daughter about hunting has presented its own set of unique lessons.

My first exposure to hunting was at a young age, when I witnessed maggots crawling out of a small buck's eyes in a friend's backyard in central Wyoming. This experience left a lasting impression on me, and I couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 years old at the time.

I tucked most of the meat away in a napkin to throw out later.

As I grew older, my initial dislike for hunting persisted. Even after college, when my boyfriend informed me that he had shot a deer, I reacted negatively, calling him a "Bambi killer" and slamming my laptop closed.

Despite my initial reaction, I began to understand the hypocrisy of my actions. I couldn't comprehend why someone I loved could find joy in taking a life, but I was willing to learn.
