Ahead of International Champagne Day on October 24, 2025, we highlight eight Champagnes to try. Sparkling wine is produced globally, but only one region can claim the name Champagne.
Beyond legal reasons, the unique terroir of Champagne, particularly its chalky soils, combined with centuries of winemaking history, leaves a distinct imprint on the wine. Located about two-and-a-half hours east of Paris, Champagne is a single appellation with five main subregions:
- Montagne de Reims
- Vallée de la Marne
- Côte des Blancs
- Côte de Sézanne
- Côte des Bar
The region’s unique terroir combined with centuries of winemaking history leave a distinct imprint on the wine, which while often imitated is never duplicated.
