Ruth Bond-Martinson, a WW2 veteran, is celebrating her 100th birthday, marking a milestone in a life dedicated to forging space for women and girls in the military.
At 18, Bond-Martinson joined the navy in 1944 and arrived in Windsor, Ont., for training, only to be forgotten at the train station. She recalled,
“They forgot I was coming,”and thought,
“Nobody wants me.”
Despite the challenging start, Bond-Martinson went on to serve with pride, and her dedication to the military has not wavered. Growing up in a navy-oriented family in Belmont, Ont., she still feels immense pride for the uniform she wore during the Second World War.
