President José Jerí, who assumed the presidency after Congress voted to impeach Dina Boluarte, has named a retired general to oversee the "war" on gangs.
Jerí, 38, has promised to lead a transitional government until elections on April 12, 2026, amid a surge in gang-related violence.
Jerí swore in a new Cabinet and named 61-year-old retired police general Vicente Tiburcio as his interior minister.
Tiburcio was chosen for his experience in fighting "organised crime, drug-rafficking and terrorism," according to a government statement.
The government has stated that Tiburcio's experience makes him suitable for the role.
