Victorian Liberals to scrap statewide Treaty if elected

Victorian Liberals to Scrap Statewide Treaty

The Victorian Liberals have pledged to dismiss the state's landmark Treaty legislation within 100 days if they win the government at the next election in 2026.

Shadow minister for Aboriginal affairs Melina Bath announced that instead of the Treaty, the Liberals would establish a First Nations advisory body separate from the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria.

We are happy and willing to always listen to leaders in our community, in our Aboriginal communities, but this policy will be about across the board, listening to all voices, not just the First Peoples' Assembly.

The Treaty bill, introduced last month, formally recognizes the First Peoples' Assembly, now known as Gellung Warl, as the permanent representative and deliberative body for Traditional Owners and First Peoples in Victoria.
