After student suicide, Ashish Sood urges schools to build emotionally safe ecosystems

Quoting from Abraham Lincoln’s well-known letter to his son’s teacher, Minister Ashish Sood reminded educational institutions that children should be guided not only with strength but also with understanding and empathy. He emphasized that every school must foster an environment where students feel emotionally secure and supported, especially in light of recent tragic incidents involving young learners.

Sood highlighted the critical role teachers play in shaping students’ mental health and emotional resilience. He urged schools to shift their focus from purely academic performance to a more holistic educational model that prioritizes the well-being of every child.

“Our children must be taught to be strong, but they must also be taught to be kind and compassionate,” Sood said while addressing educators and parents.

He suggested setting up dedicated counseling departments in every school to identify early signs of stress, anxiety, or distress among students. Additionally, he called for increased collaboration between schools, parents, and mental health experts to create a network of continuous emotional support.

Sood concluded that educational environments must not only produce capable students but also nurture happier, more confident individuals capable of handling life’s challenges with balance and empathy.
