Moderate Liberal Assumes Leadership After Party Turmoil

A moderate Liberal has stepped in to lead one of the party's weakest branches after the sudden resignation of its two leaders. Mark Parton took charge of the Canberra Liberals following the departures of Leanne Castley and her deputy Jeremy Hanson on Monday.

Castley and Hanson resigned, stating their exit would give the Liberals the best chance to win the 2028 election. Castley previously unseated then-Liberal leader Elizabeth Lee after the 2024 election defeat in October.

"In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision." – Leanne Castley

Canberra Liberals' Long Struggle

The Canberra Liberals have struggled politically for over 20 years and will have been in opposition for approximately 27 years by 2028. The party faces challenges in the progressive electorate of the ACT, where it holds no federal seats.

New Leadership Team

"It's vital that we continue to strengthen the cohesion within our party. By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose." – Mark Parton

The Canberra Liberals have faced criticism for being too conservative in a region that leans progressive, impacting their electoral chances.

Author's Summary

The Canberra Liberals' leadership change aims to unify the party and rebuild after decades of opposition in a challenging political environment.
