Josh Hutcherson joined Rachel Sennott’s HBO comedy “I Love LA” relatively late, stepping in after a recast following the original pilot’s completion. Despite joining mid-process, he had ample opportunity to shape his character alongside Sennott and co-showrunner Emma Barrie.
“We very quickly all got on the same page, which was we didn’t want Dylan to just be the square, the boring, nothing guy,” Hutcherson told TheWrap. “We wanted to find some textures to him that felt funny and dynamic and different, rather than something that we’ve seen before.”
Working closely with the show’s creative team, Hutcherson redefined Dylan — the longtime live-in boyfriend of Sennott’s character, Maia. Their collaborative process explored Dylan’s motivations, inner life, and the reasons behind his relationship with Maia.
Dylan’s character evolved significantly from the pilot version originally played by Miles Robbins (“Blockers,” “Old Dads”), becoming more layered and engaging under Hutcherson’s approach.
Josh Hutcherson reimagined his "I Love LA" character with Rachel Sennott and Emma Barrie, turning Dylan from a dull stereotype into a more nuanced, lively presence.
