Milton District Hospital Set to Add 123 Beds Under Provincial Expansion Plan

Milton District Hospital to Add 123 Beds in Provincial Expansion

Halton Healthcare has secured provincial approval and funding to increase hospital capacity in the region. Over the next two years, up to 123 acute care beds will be added at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and Milton District Hospital (MDH).

Project Details

The expansion involves developing previously unfinished ("shelled") space at OTMH and adding new facilities at MDH. This will enhance access to timely hospital care and create both construction jobs and long-term healthcare positions. Shelled space means areas designed to be completed as demand grows.

Leadership Statement

“The expansion is about putting patients first. As our communities grow, we’re making sure our hospitals grow with them so that every person who needs care can receive it when they need it most,” said Melissa Farrell, president and CEO of Halton Healthcare.

Regional Healthcare Challenges

Ontario hospitals face rising demand, especially given that Halton's population aged 75 and older is expected to double in the next two decades. The expansion addresses this by creating modern patient spaces with private and semi-private rooms designed for comfort, dignity, and better recovery.

Construction Approach and Impact

The work will take place within the existing hospital infrastructure, reducing disruption and accelerating completion times. Provincial officials have recognized this investment as vital for improving healthcare access across the region.

Author's summary: Halton Healthcare is expanding OTMH and MDH by adding 123 acute care beds, accommodating growing regional demand with modern facilities and creating healthcare jobs.
