A devastating blaze struck the Olympia Place apartment complex on Olympia Drive in Amherst on Friday night, forcing more than 200 residents to evacuate. Officials reported several explosions at the site, likely caused by fuel tanks from an ongoing construction project.
The fire began around 8:19 p.m. and quickly spread to multiple nearby buildings. According to the Amherst Fire Department, a crane collapsed amid the flames, and low water pressure significantly slowed firefighting efforts. Crews from neighboring towns joined forces to contain the inferno.
“A building under construction had caught fire and was spreading to multiple buildings,” said the Amherst Fire Department.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman officially declared a state of emergency to coordinate resources and protect public safety. He urged residents to minimize non-essential water use so critical reserves could support ongoing firefighting operations.
“Over a million gallons of water have been used so far,” local officials noted, warning that it could take several days for Amherst’s water levels to recover.
No injuries were reported, but 232 residents were displaced and are receiving assistance. Fire crews remained at the scene overnight to ensure the blaze stays under control.
