Match Overview

South African coach Darryl Fisher acknowledges that the Cook Islands enter Sunday’s IRL Rugby League World Cup 2026 qualifier at CommBank Stadium as clear favourites. However, he is enthusiastic about the Rhinos squad's potential.

The match will determine the final team to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The Cook Islands team boasts a strong lineup featuring NRL and Super League stars such as KL Iro, Brendan Piakura, and Marata Niukore.

In contrast, the South African Rhinos consist mainly of players from state-level competitions in NSW, Queensland, and Western Australia, alongside South African-based players. Notably, Niel Beukes, a former Storm and Cowboys triallist who played Super Rugby for the Pretoria-based Blue Bulls, will make his international debut.

Coach Darryl Fisher’s Comments

“The squad is looking pretty good, they have been training really well and they are in good shape. We are well aware of the level of opposition we are up against, but it is an opportunity for our players to play guys at that level.
“If they put their best foot forward and play to their capabilities, they will give themselves a chance. I certainly can’t ask any more of them in terms of their preparation and effort to get ready for the game. I am impressed by how they are looking and if they can manage the physical pressure.”

Author's summary: The upcoming qualifier highlights a tough challenge for South Africa against a star-studded Cook Islands team, with coach Fisher optimistic about his squad’s preparation and resilience.
