Thatcher Demko will not play for the Vancouver Canucks in their upcoming game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night after missing practice on Friday. This news disappointed Canucks fans who had hoped for his participation.
Head coach Adam Foote addressed Demko’s status following Friday’s practice, aiming to minimize concerns about the goalie’s injury.
“We had a conversation with him to take care of himself, and know, in a condensed schedule, when he feels he needs a little bit of time off, that’s what he’s doing.”
Demko had a promising start this season, posting a 5-4 record with a .911 save percentage. He is ranked fifth in the NHL for goals saved above expected, a key metric for goaltenders, as reported by MoneyPuck.
Although Demko skated on Saturday morning, he will not be in the game lineup. Kevin Lankinen is set to start as goaltender against Columbus.

Due to Demko’s absence, the Canucks recalled Jiri Patera under emergency conditions on Friday. However, Patera was unavailable for practice because he was with the Abbotsford Canucks in a back-to-back series against the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. This left Lankinen and Abbotsford’s Alex Kotai as the only goaltenders available at practice.
The Canucks face a goaltending challenge with Demko sidelined, relying on Lankinen and others, while Demko's condition remains cautiously managed by the coaching staff.
Thatcher Demko will miss the next Canucks game despite skating recently, as the team adjusts its goalie lineup amid a demanding schedule and his cautious recovery.
