Sam Smith spoke about the bullying they endured at school related to their weight, describing it as a “crippling” ordeal that led them to have liposuction at just 13 years old.
Smith shared,
“I couldn't go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell.”This difficult experience deeply affected their childhood and self-esteem.
During the fifth episode of the Podcrushed podcast, Smith, who uses they/them pronouns, opened up to host Penn Badgley about their struggles with weight and their decision to pursue cosmetic surgery early on.
Smith said,
“For me, it was always my weight. My weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about.”
They added,
“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat using suction to contour specific areas of the body.
When Badgley asked about Smith’s parents’ reaction to the procedure at such a young age, Smith responded,
“They were supportive.”
Sam Smith bravely shared how childhood bullying over their weight led to liposuction at 13, highlighting the enduring impact of bullying and the importance of family support.
