'It's a reality': Living in the shadow of younger brother Jimmy Barnes

Living in the Shadow of Younger Brother Jimmy Barnes

John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, the older brother of famous musician Jimmy Barnes, has shared insights about his past struggles, drug use, and the family dynamic, including the impact of his sibling’s fame.

"Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite."

Despite the attention around Jimmy Barnes, Swanee has always supported and been proud of his siblings without feeling bothered by any rivalry.

"I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did."

Initially, Swanee stayed as a drummer in his band, earning $25 a week, not wanting to lose that steady income. He was surprised to hear about the formation of Jimmy's band involving Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich.

Six months after the band started, Swanee joined as a singer but soon realized he wasn’t essential to the group.

"I'm smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me."

After leaving, he pursued a successful solo career and joined other bands, including replacing Angry Anderson in The Party Boys, with whom he achieved a number one hit.

Summary: Swanee, Jimmy Barnes' older brother, balanced his own music career while living under the shadow of his famous sibling, overcoming challenges and finding success on his own terms.
