Detention Sergeant Charged with Battery

Former Boundary County jail employee Bryant Brown has been charged with aggravated battery after allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. The case moved forward when formal charges were filed in September.

A preliminary hearing for the 37-year-old is scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse. Two earlier hearings were postponed for undisclosed reasons. Brown posted a $50,000 bond and has not yet entered a plea.

Incident Details

The incident involved an inmate arrested by the Bonners Ferry Police Department on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County. The victim’s name has not been disclosed in accordance with standard reporting policy.

According to Sheriff’s Detective Brandon Blackmore, the man was intoxicated, verbally abusive, and uncooperative with jail staff. After a heated exchange, Brown allegedly shoved the man against a glass window and struck him, causing his head to hit a brick wall.

The affidavit further claims the inmate tried to grab Brown’s arms to defend himself but did not fight back. Brown then reportedly grabbed the inmate by the throat and slammed his head into the wall again.
