At the Smart City Expo in Barcelona, Luca Pascotto, Head of Road Safety and Global Advocacy at the FIA, explained to Zag Daily how data-driven safety practices from Formula 1 can be applied to reduce accidents on city roads.
In Formula 1, even the tiniest mistake can separate victory from disaster. Pascotto believes that this same culture of precision and constant vigilance can help create safer streets worldwide.
“We might be known for Formula 1 but our roots are in mobility. This is where it all began for us and where our mission to make mobility safer, more affordable and more sustainable for everyone started,” said Pascotto.
He highlighted that the FIA’s position at the intersection of motorsport and mobility offers valuable insights into how performance and precision can save lives.
“By applying motorsport’s culture of continuous improvement and data-led decision-making, cities can design safer transport systems for all road users,” Pascotto explained.
He emphasized the need for cities to embrace a systemic safety approach—one that avoids assigning blame to individuals and instead integrates protection into all aspects of urban mobility planning.
Pascotto pointed to the Roadscor initiative, developed with EIT Urban Mobility in Rome, which employs advanced simulation technology to predict and prevent potential crash scenarios before they happen.
Luca Pascotto urges cities to adopt Formula 1’s precision and data-driven mindset to create safer, more sustainable mobility systems that proactively prevent accidents.
