Chelsea Biddell, defender for the Adelaide Crows, is set to play her 75th AFLW game this Sunday in the elimination final against St Kilda. At 27 years old, she has embraced her evolving leadership role, both on and off the field.
Biddell’s appointment to the Crows' leadership group at the start of the season marked a significant personal achievement, representing years of steady development and effort.
“That was pretty special to be announced as part of the leadership group this year, especially to be voted in by your peers, it’s very nice,” Biddell said.
She acknowledged that leadership did not come naturally at first, explaining that becoming consistent in games helped her realize the importance of guiding teammates:
“Leadership has been something I’ve been working on over the years, when I started to get games consistently, it was then being able to bring others along with me. I had to work really hard on that part of my game, especially when I started to become one of the more experienced players.”
Biddell also highlighted the challenge of developing her communication skills, as she is not naturally outspoken:
“In terms of on the field, I’m not really the loudest person, so I think it was just developing that voice and communication that I really had to build on.”
Initially drafted as a forward in the 2019 AFLW Draft, Biddell struggled to secure a permanent spot in a strong Crows lineup. Her perseverance paid off in 2022 when she transitioned to a defensive role, solidifying her place in the team’s backline.
This positional change proved pivotal in her career, allowing her to become a key figure in Adelaide’s defense.
With 75 games under her belt and a leadership role, Biddell is a vital part of the Crows’ quest for finals success this season.
