Manchester United’s young talent James Overy has earned a call-up to the Australia national squad for the upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. The selection marks a major milestone in his rapid rise through the ranks.
Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic named eleven newcomers in his roster, with United academy prospect Overy expected to continue his strong form following standout performances at the U20 World Cup.
Overy, who turns 18 this weekend, joined Manchester United during the summer of 2024 under a scholarship contract before signing his first professional deal in July of the same year. Earlier this year, manager Ruben Amorim introduced the young player to first-team training at Carrington ahead of the Premier League fixture versus Chelsea.
After joining United, Overy suffered an injury that kept him sidelined for eight months. He made his debut for the Under-18s in February, according to the Manchester Evening News. Since then, he has become a regular in Darren Fletcher’s side and also featured for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,” said former Under-18s coach Adam Lawrence in an interview with MUTV.
James Overy’s journey from injury setback to national team selection highlights his rapid development and growing influence within Manchester United’s youth system.
