Stranger Things season 5, the series' final chapter, is divided into three parts released over two months. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, say this structure allows the story to reach a greater scale than before.
Ross Duffer explained in an interview with SFX Magazine that unlike season 4, where the split was unplanned due to the pandemic, this time they designed season 5 to be split into two distinct halves from the start.
"Volume One really exists as its own mega-movie. It has its own climax."
The fourth episode of season 5, which concludes Volume One, stands out as the most difficult episode they have created. Ross called it “the hardest thing that we've ever done on a technical level.”
"Episode four was the most challenging episode we've ever made, and that includes the finale – though on an emotional level, the finale was the hardest."
Ross shared the emotional toll of making the finale, revealing how deeply it affected him.
"I don't know how many days I found myself crying, and I'm not someone who cries very often outside of watching Pixar movies."
Author's summary: The Duffer Brothers have thoughtfully structured Stranger Things season 5 to enhance storytelling, with episodes that push technical and emotional boundaries.
