The Met Office has clarified concerns about potential snowfall in the UK, addressing recent reports suggesting wintry weather could reach southern cities like London and Southampton. As temperatures drop and daylight hours shorten, some speculation about early snow has circulated.
Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst confirmed that snowfall is anticipated but will be limited to Scotland's highest peaks. He stated:
“At this stage, for the vast majority of people it looks unlikely. At the moment, there is a little bit of snow falling over the Scottish mountains, so anyone in the Cairngorms could be seeing some on the summits up there.”
He also noted that this snow is temporary and unlikely to persist.
Mr. Dewhurst explained the temporary nature of the snow cover in the highlands and the mild conditions expected to follow:
“This weekend we could see temporary coverings of snow on the Scottish mountains, but by Sunday night and through to Monday, the whole of next week looks very mild.”
The forecasters describe next weekend’s weather as "highly changeable," but widespread snow across the UK remains unlikely outside the Scottish mountains.
Author's summary: The Met Office forecasts limited snow confined to Scottish peaks with milder weather returning quickly, debunking widespread snowfall fears in southern UK regions.
