The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday carries significant weight for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While still powerful worldwide, the MCU's recent releases haven't matched past blockbuster success. For example, The Fantastic Four: First Steps earned just over $500 million—respectable, but not a major hit by Marvel standards.
The anticipation builds for the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film, which is expected to perform well, followed by the much-awaited MCU crossover, Avengers: Doomsday. This film faced challenges, including replacing Jonathan Majors as the lead villain, changing directors, and integrating several Fox-era X-Men characters. Additionally, Robert Downey Jr. returns as Doctor Doom, reportedly for a substantial salary.
Kevin Feige has hinted that after this and the next Avengers movie, the MCU will undergo a form of reboot, making Avengers: Doomsday a finale of sorts for this phase of the franchise.
Simu Liu recently spoke about the film in an interview with ScreenRant, highlighting its emotional resonance alongside its scale.
“I mean, there are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them,” he said. “It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that.”
Avengers: Doomsday aims not only to impress with its vast ensemble and action but also to connect deeply with viewers, marking an important chapter before the MCU's next evolution.
