Veteran center David Kampf has briefly stepped away from the AHL's Toronto Marlies to evaluate his future. Over the offseason, the Maple Leafs attempted to find a new team for Kampf, but no trade materialized. Consequently, he was waived during training camp and, after going unclaimed, assigned to the AHL Toronto team.
Given that GM Brad Treliving signed the 30-year-old to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago, this outcome was unexpected. The original plan was for Kampf to anchor the fourth line and contribute strong work on faceoffs and penalty killing. However, last season his role diminished under coach Craig Berube, and now lower-cost players fill his previous roster spot.
This season, Kampf has appeared in only four of seven games with the Marlies and did not dress for the recent road game in Chicago. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the veteran is taking a few days to consider his future.
"The veteran is taking a couple of days to ponder his future."
In recent years, several players have left guaranteed contracts to seek better NHL opportunities or a return to the league. This group includes Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina. Kampf might be considering a similar path, even though it means forfeiting over $3 million owed between this season's salary and next season's signing bonus.
David Kampf is reassessing his career after a reduced role and AHL demotion, possibly considering leaving guaranteed NHL money for a better opportunity.
