Director Rebecca Miller discusses with GQ the creation of an intimate documentary miniseries on the legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Apple TV’s Scorsese brings together key figures from Scorsese’s extensive career, including Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, and Margot Robbie. Joe Pesci declined to participate. Most notably, Scorsese himself contributed 20 hours of interviews, sharing candid reflections.
The series offers a rare and honest look into Scorsese’s life, covering his struggles with addiction in the 1980s, his complex relationship with faith, early encounters with the mob, and his family dynamics, including his daughters and wife Helen Morris’ battle with Parkinson’s disease.
It also provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes view of the making of some of Scorsese’s most famous works, such as GoodFellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Raging Bull.
"To spend such a long time talking to this artist — it's like you are learning about his life, but you're also learning about film and all the films that influenced him. So there was almost like a going to graduate school quality about it."
This documentary stands out as a unique, deeply revealing tribute to one of cinema’s greatest directors.
