The Los Angeles Lakers began the 2025-26 season without LeBron James, facing challenges, but Austin Reaves has emerged as a standout performer.
Lakers forward Rui Hachimura recently recalled the moment he first recognized Reaves’ talent. Transferred to the team three years ago, Hachimura admitted he knew little about Reaves at the time due to Reaves’ injury.
“I’m not gonna lie, three years ago, when I got traded here, I honestly didn’t know about him before. He was injured, I think, at that time,” Hachimura said.
Hachimura’s attention was captured when Reaves returned in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He noticed Reaves confidently challenge Giannis Antetokounmpo and finish with a layup.
“I think he came back against Milwaukee. He made a move on Giannis at the top and finished with a layup. I was like, ‘Ooh, okay, he got it,’” Hachimura explained.
Since that game, Reaves has steadily improved, building on his breakthrough 2022-23 season. He is now delivering the strongest start of his NBA career.
With LeBron James sidelined due to sciatica and Luka Doncic also out, Reaves has taken on a significant role, performing exceptionally well under pressure.
Austin Reaves has evolved into a crucial player for the Lakers, proving himself as a rising star after catching Rui Hachimura's attention with his confident play against tough opponents.
